'Is that...The Karate Kid??' whispered Jared.
Someone on the back row shushed him. He answered by turning to the woman who did it and taking a large and noisy sip of his soda.
'No, he can't...wait, I think he is!' whispered Peter lower, looking at the screen.
'Wow! I hope I won't age like that!' said Jared grabbing some of Peter's popcorn.
'Relax, dude, you're pretty!' smiled Peter and looked back at the screen again.
And luckily for the woman on the back row, Jared was incapable of speaking then. He was pretty busy smiling and looking at Peter and spent the last hour and 55 minutes doing the same.
'Til this day, Peter never found out that Jared never actually watched 'My Cousin Vinny'. He listened to it, sure. He knew all the lines and could quote it by heart, even his impression of the judge was dead on, but he never watched it. He only knew the length of Marisa Tomei's legs, how hot she looked with a nightgown and how cute she looked asleep because they were some of the topics of conversation Peter had once the movie finished every time they saw it...well, Peter saw it.
Each time, Jared merely watched Peter. How he was on the edge of his seat every time Billy and Stan got arrested for murder, the slight worry on his face when Vinny didn't seem to know how an arraignment worked, and how he kept blushing like a stupid 16 year old when Marisa showed up.
And every time he remembered that first time they went to the movies, he regrets not kissing Peter after his 'I wanna be a lawyer' speech when they were leaving the theater.
'And I want a leather jacket,' said Jared angrily pointing at Joe Pesci on a poster. 'But doesn't mean I'm gonna buy one!'
Peter looked hurt. He didn't like see him hurt, so he hurried to explain why this idea was so freaking ridiculous.
'Lawyers are bastards! They're greedy and...and vicious, and cold hearted...you're not any of those things!'
'Just because your dad and his friends are like that doesn't mean all lawyers are the same. I mean...looked at Vinny!'
'He's not real!'
'But he could be. How cool it'd be if there were a lawyer like that!'
'Incompetent? There's plenty of those'
'No. One that cares about his clients and doesn't think of them as money. One that is willing to do anything for his clients, even get his ass in jail because he know they're innocent! Leaving the courthouse with your head high cause you did your best without compromising your principles. That's the kind of lawyer I'd like to be...'
If Jared had actually watched the movie, he'd know that right now he was looking at Peter the way Vinny looked at Mona when she was giving her testimony.
'I'd like you to be that lawyer,' he finally smiled getting closer to Peter. He stood there for a moment, not knowing what to do, so he just patted him on the shoulders and moved two steps away.
'Thanks, dude,' said Peter walking those two steps forward and giving Jared a hug.
Jared didn't feel ridiculous at all hugging his best friend in the middle of the street, and thought that was nice. After a few more than an average amount of minutes, they broke the hug and started walking home.
'You would look great in a leather jacket, though!' declared Peter.
'I know! But I don't think I could pull the cowboy boots off,' replied Jared happily.
